CANADA: Quebec to identify non-resident property purchasers

The Quebec government has issued a draft regulation under which non-resident purchasers of residential properties will be identified in the land registry to state the citizenship or permanent residency status of each individual and to report the original places of residence of companies and trusts.

The regulation is scheduled to come into force on 1 October 2020, and is likely to be followed by extra property taxes on non-resident owners, as has already happened in Ontario and British Columbia.
