The US Internal Revenue Service has begun a mailshot to 10,000 virtual currency owners advising them to pay back taxes, and file amended returns including previously unreported digital transactions. IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig warned taxpayers to ‘take these letters very seriously’, and noted that virtual currency is property for federal tax purposes.
