CANADA: CRA waives penalties for underused housing tax

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has waived late-filing penalties for property owners who fail to meet the 30 April 2023 reporting deadline for the Underused Housing Tax Act. This is the first year the Act has been in effect and the CRA says it recognises the 'unique challenges' for non-resident owners to report usage of their properties, especially as they will need to obtain Canadian business or tax identification numbers before filing. They now have until 31 October 2023 to submit their returns and pay the 1 per cent tax for the 2022 calendar year.
