The Hong Kong government will bring the Mainland Judgments in Civil and Commercial Matters (Reciprocal Enforcement) Ordinance (Cap. 645) into effect on 29 January 2024. The new agreement now covers not just contractual disputes but almost all matters of a civil and commercial nature. Exceptions include injunctions, freezing orders, estate disputes and matrimonial or family cases, which are covered by a separate ordinance. Moreover, it abolishes the rule that judgments can be reciprocally enforced only if the parties had originally agreed to an exclusive jurisdiction clause.
